sunday sounds
this week some pure indulgence... been in the mood for some 80s recently, and a ssg on twitter kindly pointed me towards these mixtapes from games, aka oneohtrix point never and joel ford. i've got their recent release sitting on my desktop, but have yet to get around to listening to it. i'll have to change that soon, because these mixtapes are killer. basically they've taken a bunch of 80s tracks, slowed them down, and warped the fuck out of them. the result is that it totally amplifies the 80s feel and takes it into a realm well beyond awesome.
games - heaven can wait mixtape I
games - heaven can wait mixtape II
games - heaven can wait mixtape III
the highlight for me is probably 'tarzan boy' in pt 3, yep, that's what we are talking about... they've got some other mixtapes that you can stream on the games soundcloud. have a good sunday people. more soon.

a cool regressive experience but the 'warped the fuck out of them' side is a bit disappointing. i expected a bit less respect to the original tracks and more sick witchcraft, a bit like this one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0ofp0a-Qwk
ReplyDeleteThere's a new, screw, in the neighbourhoo - and it sounds so goo!
ReplyDeletePass the cough mixture...
...for me it's very hard to understand this move without recourse to pristine digital sound design...
...no desire for mud without a laptop full of gloss...
I agree, slowed down does not equal 'warped the fuck out of...'; but still, sounds ace anyway.
ReplyDeleteM83 was mining similar sonic territory. His was more amphetamine or acid fueled, where as this is like smoking weed after consuming poppy tea. Word.
ReplyDeleteapologies, i might have got a bit over-excited / over-zealous with my description... i'm not necessarily saying this is anything amazing, i just really like it. a bunch of tracks i connect with and i like how they've put them together. but yes, perhaps i was over-stretching things. if anyone has links to something along these lines that they think is better, by all means post them, i'd love to check.
ReplyDeleteThat "lady in red" re-imagining sounds like the end of creativity. It induces the same feeling as when something goes very very wrong.
ReplyDeleteStrangely enough, Oneohtrix Point Never has also done a take on The Lady In Red. His is much more subtle warping.

also, somewhat related...the new spectral cassette has been issued over at http://pontone.pl/
Point Never played in Seattle for the Decibel Festival 2010, and next to Fennesz and Robert Henke he just took the festival. SO GOOD. Thanks for sharing these incredible mixes. They are very much being enjoyed over here. I am really exciting to see more work come out from him...
ReplyDeleteAnyone got a tracklisting for these?
ReplyDeletethe mixtapes are similar to the mater suspiria vision's zombie rave mixtapes http://soundcloud.com/o-i-r-o/zombie-r4ve
ReplyDeletebut i prefer zombie rave 2 (narrated by klaus kinski) *o*

ReplyDeletethanks for these mixes! i love games!
ReplyDeletei agree the music is similar to the master suspiria vision - but i can't listen to those ravey mixes whatsoever. too much ironic anthems that i'd prefer to hear played back on a shitty car radio instead of in a pitched down megamix.
my all time favorite of this sort of thing is the more f'ed up feeling "better with a spoonful of leather" by rub n tug:
here
scarily good edits, at least i think they're edits. the unfamiliarity of this is what draws me in much more than the zombie rave mixes and, to a lesser extent, games. and it's all mixed in a slow-flowing, driving-by-yourself or driving-without-talking style. i know there isn't a lot of disco on mnml ssgs, but don't worry! this has the vibe of something else. maybe what disco producers would listen to on the way home from recording in the studio.
whoops, the link for better with a spoonful of leather is here:
ReplyDeleterub n tug it up
sorry, link seems to be down!
ReplyDelete@ david: any chance you upload that mix? i'd be very interested in hearing it, as my feeling is similar: i'm not so interested in megamixes playing too many obvious tracks.
