sunday sounds - cio d'or point of origin 11 mix

a special treat for you this weekend, a lovely new ambient mix from a very good friend of the ssgs, cio d'or. this is a delicate, beautiful mix that follows on perfectly from the last sunday sounds mix from tengui.

this is what cio had to say about the mix:

"it was this typical winter feeling in the beginning of february, nature is sleeping before it will be awake again... this time has the charisma of silence. a perfect time for reflections."

cio d'or - point of origin 11

thanks to cio for sharing this mix with us, and also to emanuel geller who mastered it. enjoy your sunday...

This is great, thanks !
Thanks to you ssgs I've grown a taste for ambient music and now I sometimes find myself in situations when I can't think of listening to anything else.

pretty interesting mix...but the part that perplexes me...

mastering a podcast?

just check out the waveforms on the multitude of mixes at soundcloud. the variance in volume and dynamic range forces me to adjust my players volume with many podcasts. thank you cio for quality!

hate to say it, but there's always going to be variation in wavform in a podcast. no two tracks are made exactly the same, and unless you're completely tone-deaf, it shouldn't be hard to keep them in the same volume range via the vu meters on a mixer.

i can't really remember the last time i actually had to finite adjust itunes to enjoy playing back music.

as far i know, it was mainly mastered to boost the volume. sometimes with these more ambient / classical sounds, the levels can be very low / uneven. so i think it makes sense.

and eric, you might be surprised, quite a few of our mixes have been mastered...

then i think mastering and mixing are getting confused. and normalizing is something entirely different.

with the move away from mix cds where WAV rates is obviously the norm, anything that improves the quality of online mixes is great imo. i respect this attention to detail from cio too, full respect (even if it was just the volume).

i recently parted with money on an UQ Move D mix, and it's only 128 kbps. Piss take.

Anyway, love this mix. Seem to be on more and more of an ambient trip recently. Maybe it's the winter vibe as the artist touched upon.

eric cloutier said...

wait...uq is selling mixes at 128kbps?! hahah. what a fucking joke.

stunning Cio!!!
we have such simlar tastes...

eric: lots of dj mixes are mastered - better sound and levels. if you can do it, then why the hell not!?

eric cloutier said...

i can see the importance of getting it mastered when its going to come out on a major label, be put on cd, or be sold online...

but outside of that, i'd say normalizing the thing and maybe taking out a couple pops from vinyl is about all you need to do.

then again...i'm the guy that's more partial to dj mixes being done by an actual dj, letting you know he's human and not just pushing buttons and having it be flawless, so that slightly raw, less-than-perfect sound is more appealing to me.

its the detroit that's (still) in me.
