mnml ssgs mx44 - eric cloutier
mx44 comes from a very good friend of the ssgs, eric cloutier. after an excellent first ssg mix, and then winning over the japanese crowd at his debut performance at labyrinth, we wanted another mix out of him and he agreed, so good news for everybody. and, as expected, he has really stepped up to the plate. i think this is probably my favourite mix i've heard from him. demonstrating his breadth, the sound is quite different from his earlier contribution, but there is one element that can be found in both, and that is the pitched down BPMs. if there is one thing i think defines eric's sets is that they are serious slow burners. he does a great job of getting maximum impact without jacking it up too much. this mix has a fantastic pace and flow throughout, building up nicely before really taking off around the 20 minute mark. and he gets bonus points for finishing with a record i love. i have a feeling a lot of ssgs are going to really enjoy this one...

if you want more info, check eric's myspace or homepage. you can catch him playing regularly around new york, and he is heading over to europe for some gigs in the 2nd half of february and early march 2010. a good opportunity to catch someone who is definitely on the rise.
big thanks to eric for the mix. don't worry, there is a tracklisting for this... next week we've got our christmas special, then a couple more mixes lined up to finish off '09 and start '10 in style...

Congrats on a successful year Eric! Happy New Year and thanks for all your great mixes this past year. Keep up the good work and keep the music deep.
ReplyDeleteyeeeeeeah!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the mix! One thing I'm always impressed with Eric is that he's constantly posting on here. Always nice to see artists in any genre participating in discussions etc.
ReplyDeleteGreat! really enjoyed all of his mixes so far, hope that the sound quality is better than his projektion podcast which was awful at moments, I´m still scratching my head over some tracks he used over there.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion is give another podcast to Santiago Salazar, so far that is my absolute favourite, or maybe his partner from ICAN Esteban Adame, Dex from UR, just a thought, since I feel there are a lot of artists that you haven´t covered here, maybe do an open post where you ask for suggestions, something similar.
@ fernando: dont worry, no probs with the sound on this one. the recording is just as eric gave it to us. as for other artists, yes there are plenty of people we havent gotten around to including. basically the situation now is we have just run out of room. our books are basically full until we finish the series in a month or so. we've basically stopped asking people. but in the future we will look at doing something again, and trying to bring in new artists.
ReplyDeleteSuperb and sexy mix by Eric. A keeper!
ReplyDeleteWooo on the dl, this should do nicely for the plane home, just in time!
ReplyDeleteThanks all, Ive loved everything ive heard by Eric so far, just gave his first ssg mix a listen last night. Quality
On a slightly unrelated note, Ive been wondering ever since I first came across this site; what does ssg stand for? Cant figure it out
ReplyDelete@Owen, I think it's sausages. Underneath the logo there a heap of skinny sausages-minimal sausages so to speak. I'm surprised this hasn't come up before actually.
ReplyDeletesounds wonderful. really takes me away.
ReplyDeleteAn dieser Stelle will ich noch den Eddi grüßen!

Big thanks to Eric! Well prepared vision in this mix, definitely has it's huge moments, but it is also strikingly calculated (very positive meaning of this). And for me it shows a steady development compared to the earlier ssg mix. But that is just me. Thanks again for making it available!
ReplyDeleteCool. Was somewhat lukewarm about Eric's ssg mix, but loved the Projektion - saved my life that one, keeping me company as it did on a number of 'orrible flights this year.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I was under the impression the mix series was winding up - delighted there's more excellence to come.
Heartfelt congrats on an amazing year for an inspirational blog, and fair play for keeping the home fire's burning.
Another beauty to add in my ever growing list of mnmlssgs-gems, thanks again!
ReplyDeleteAn absolutely superb, thoughtful mix. I really appreciate the attention to detail AND the 'Big Picture' that you have crafted Eric.
ReplyDeleteAs always, a heartfelt thanks to all the responsible parties!
Yea Eric, great mix. Definite keeper..plus, you played Blue, so I love you.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, have you thought about producing? I feel like you could make something really special.
Great stuff EC!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds trippier and dare i say more into 'head fuck' territory than some of your earliar mixes...is this a result of your experience at labyrinth or is this the direction your sound has mutated to at the moment?
cheers and thanks ssgs!
thanks for all the nice words, guys! glad everyone is enjoying the mix. :)
ReplyDeleteas for the change in sound...its not really a change, to be honest. i got annoyed with a lot of the techno, and, dare i say, minimal stuff going on for a while, so i was really focused on my house sound, all the while keeping it somewhat techy and quirky (think daniel bell). but between some of the mixes on here, a resurgence in good techno, my going back through my vinyl and digging up records i grew up and fell in love with, and labyrinth, my styles aren't changing, i'm just reverting back to what i initially started off playing and listening to. i actually always was a huge techno fan - what we're calling "headfuck" now isn't really a new thing, to be honest - and i always have kept this same cadence to my mixes, with the slower, chugging, ethereal vibe to them, even back 12+ years ago, so i'm more so just reexploring myself and finding another side (again).
next goal is to blend them both properly, which this mix was a good example of, in my eyes. think daniel bell meets dozzy. :)
bell meets dozzy. well, if you can manage that you'll be on to something special.

ReplyDeleteawesome mix (as always from Eric:)
ReplyDeletei think he's one of the only DJs out there anymore who actually understand the beauty of BPM restraint, and restraint in general.
when i had the pleasure of playing alongside him in Chicago, his set kicked my ass for well over 3 hours, and i never got sick of it - a phenomenon i thought long lost.
he's one of the only DJs left on the planet that my bitter, jaded ass actually gets excited to hear a mix from.
big ups, Eric, and props for doing it right.

haha brock, i was there in chicago for you, stephen hitchell's intrusion set, and then eric, whom up until then i was completely unfamiliar with before then. i still think of eric's set that morning as being one loooong smoooooth deep breath, slowly building up and coming down. and then, eric, as you stopped your last record, i believe you said something like "well, i'm probably going to miss my flight now". that was a really fun morning; it would be nice to see you guys grace chicago with another low-key event like that soon ;-)
ReplyDeletelooking forward to this. and RA has posted their top 2009 albums... 'midtown 120 blues' took #1, yay!
only 2 tracks in, and i'm lovin it ! thankyour Eric !
ReplyDeletenow this is an awesome mix !!!
ReplyDeletevery monotone and hypnotizing. techno as it should be. class !!
downloaded completed,, can't wait to hear it 2morrow..
ReplyDelete;-)
Just want to echo Architexture, Brock, and Brian's sentiments here now that I've finally had a chance to give the mix a proper listen. Excellent stuff. Best wishes to Eric for a new year that's even more exciting than the last.
ReplyDeletei had such a fun time dancing to this with my headphones today. people around me mustve thought me mad.
ReplyDeletei am so pleased with this blog. it was recommended to me. it gives me real reason to hope that all is not lost in the world of techno.
best to you all...
this mix saved me today, eric. ;)
after listening to your set a couple of times-maybe more- Eric i have to tell u this:
ReplyDeleteYears ago when i was still interviewing jockeys, i had a long discussion with F. Kervorkian on everything and nothing..
I remember some of his words..
Especially those telling that "a dj is his musical selection, all the rest is coming with the years..."
First time i listened to you playing in Labyrinth, at the by day set and the night one, Kevorkians words came to my mind, in a way that: This guy has the musical selection 100%!
This current set is really deep and some tracks - fuck yeah- bring a smile in my mind, burn a couple of thousands of my brain cells actually..
keep walking*
p.s i miss N.Y, although have never been there, yet!
bada ... bada ... bada ... badaboom !
ReplyDeleteI like sounds & construtions. Well done ;)
