mnml ssgs mx42: mike parker

following on from last week's killer from jay ahern, now some more heat from a good friend of mnml ssgs, mike parker. this is his 2nd contribution to the series, the first being way back with mx6. things have developed a lot since then and the strength of the early mixes - from people like mike - were key in shaping the overall series. so we definitely owe him a debt of gratitude and we are very glad that he agreed to do another mix. the result is exactly what you'd expect: deep, dark, driving and hypnotic. this is a sound mnml ssgs has become well known for, and mike's mix was the 1st example of it here, so it is fitting it will probably also be the last mix of this kind in the series. beyond that i dont really have too much to say, the music speaks for itself, as does mike's distinctive take on techno.

mnml ssgs mx42: mike parker
sendspace

mike delivered a killer set of power techno at last year's labyrinth, and he is about to make his return visit to japan this week, playing in tokyo with another ssg favourite, cio d'or on saturday 5 december. for those lucky enough to be going, this is a great taste of what to expect, and for the rest of us, we still get to enjoy a prime techno cut from a quiet achiever.

mike is a man of many talents, as can be seen from the picture. for info on his various arts - visual and musical - check his website and his homepage. big thanks to mike for the mix.

  1. This mornings feeds are quite representative: 1. RA November top 50 with Johnny D poling, 2. mike parker mix on mnml ssgs.

Choice was obvious. Looking forward to listen to the second Mike Parker, as the first was a hell of a trip. Thanks for the mix!

  2. @ zoller: well put...

i'd also say, this mix is a real grower. listened to it about 5 times now and i've liked it more on each listen.

  3. 45:00 mins on for the only recorded instance of sitar sounds in dance music being A Good Thing, with the venerable exception of Orbital's Planet Of The Shapes.

As a whole, this is a beautiful example of the bassier, deeper rabbit holes modern techno can take you - somewhere to enjoy being lost for an hour or two. '09 a classic year for music generally and techno in particular.

  4. @ chris: mhm, grower. Never would've thought that I will say something like this, but interestingly the only problem I have with this mix is the Sleeparchive at around 21min...The first 18 minutes just own me, the shakier dub parts work well, the mix works well overall + I actually pretty much like what Sleeparchive does. WTF did not click for me at that point?!

Maybe it is because I had only 2 listens, 1 from it while working with numbers. Or this should help? :)

Anyways, overall very compact, with an excellent build in the early stage! Even liked some almost techier inserts here-and-there, coz they seemed to have personality.

  5. @ zoller: you dont *have* to like every part of the mix! you might listen to this 100 times and still not like the inclusion of the sleeparchive track.

i like sleeparchive, but these days my thinking is that if you are going to play that sound, you might as well just go back and play an Ø record instead.

  6. @chris: yeah, but you can try to like the whole mix. Agreed, Kuvivo would fit there just nicely.

  10. Another feather in the cap of the mix series.

If it is ending, then it is ending in style.
