mnml ssgs mx37: SCB
Six or so months ago, after interviewing him for RA, I asked Mr Paul Rose (aka Scuba) a very special request. Inspired by what I thought was one of the best tracks of the past twelve months (and still do), I wondered what a distinctly 'SCB' mix might sound like... so, on the off chance, I sent Paul the brief... - what we've received has exceeded this wee SSG's wildest expectations. SCB's mix not only belongs among the best SSG mixes so far (which, I think I can say openly, has been an incredibly high standard), I think.... well, I'll let your ears tell your brain, but personally I reckon SCB has just re-set the standard. This isn't necessarily dubstep, or house, or techno - this is simply excellent. I don't want to say much more, 'cos all I'm gonna do is gush... gosh.... ladies and gentlemen, SCB.

you guys really know how to come up with the goods! thanks a bunch, cant wait to hear this.
ReplyDeleteoh god
ReplyDeletetotally unexpected. scuba represents the distillation of everything that is great about electronic music in 2009.
ten minutes in and i see that you are not kidding, pc
scuba in my opionion is the best dj ive heard in a while i cant wait to hear this!!!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING MIX, great call Chris on Scuba!
ReplyDeleteAt some places had the same feeling as with the Nuel/Dozzy EP vs. the Nuel mixes posted here: not what expected, though in both the EP and the mixes were mean(ish).
ReplyDeleteBut, Scuba seems very "genre confident" and the mixing is very tight. This mix has flavor and MOJO! Massive! Thanks to Scuba and the ssgs again!
very very good!
ReplyDeletefresh, deep and drivin'
great feel on listening!
LOVE IT!
peace gldwll
oh god indeed.
ReplyDeleteHow nice is this ?! I thought much of the hype surrounding Scuba was just that - hype.
Eating my words now.
Gorgeousness. Thank you.
great guys...im pretty excited about this mix. i was going to see him dj at a club in the town where i live, but the club closed down just before the date. since than ive been looking foward to see him dj.
ReplyDeletewell this is just great!
MY GOD this makes up for not posting a mix on sunday morning, haha. It was already monday here, but nvm.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get this when I get home.
On the dl now :) Big mix!
ReplyDeleteScuba knows how to put a mix together. Deep, driving, & unknowing. This mix takes you to the next level. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you and thank him! What a way to wake up. I'm echoing others here, but in my book Scuba is consistently impressive.
ReplyDeleteI too thought that SCB track was one of the best of the year, and played it out constantly. This mix is a real treat.
ReplyDeletePlaylist?...
ReplyDelete@ Thomas Tiedje: the mnmlssgs hold back the playlist so that people can focus on the sounds and how they work together rather than on the elements of the mix. So enjoy for now, list usually comes later.
ReplyDeleteI've had a chance to listen to this through twice now and I have to say it is an absolute gem. A different sound than what I was expecting from the man that is Scuba; I guess this is attributed to it being an SCB mix. Anyway thanks to all involved! JP
Oh yeah...this is nice...REAL nice! This mix is not what I was expecting, but it is juuuuuust what I needed! Thanks again Chris/ssgs!!!
ReplyDeletejust to clarify, everyone should be thanking pete and paul for this mix. my involvement did not extend beyond the crappy artwork.
ReplyDeletei think this makes a really tremendous addition to the series and as people are saying, it demonstrates the depth and breadth of the talent of paul rose. respect!
This is a total burner, LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteLove you guys! The solid ongoing quality of the mixes you guys are putting out keep me awake at night.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Thank you Paul and thank you Pete!
ReplyDeleteThe mix is killer, really does distill so much good 2009 style music into one mix.
the last track is a real heart string puller!
Tracklist, anyone, plz???
ReplyDeleteYet another quality mix from this site! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI was kinda skeptical at first, but... WOW! Definitely one of the best mixes in the series so far!
ReplyDeletethx 4 that...veery inspiring and exceptional mix...dope shit
ReplyDeleteHave to agree with the general consensus on this one, an absolute classic. Probably Scuba/SCB's tightest mix yet and I say that as someone who bloody well adores his N16 mix on the Hotflush site.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you Chris and Will that the last track is indeed a beaut, one of those counter-intuitive choices that somehow ties the whole mix together perfectly.
Many thanx to you guys and particularly Paul. Gobsmacked by the consistent excellence of the mixes on this blog.
Excellent interview on RA too Peter, nice change from the usual give-a-shit answers.
ReplyDeleteafter enjoying his last set @ sub:stance @ berghain in the middle of the dancefloor, it`s again a really pleasure hearing this.
ReplyDeleteit seems, he open the gates...
Sounds great, on the d/l now.
ReplyDeleteAll the podcasts I've heard here have been excellent, nice work. Any chance of a Jens Zimmermann mix in the future? I've only ever managed to track down a couple, and both were at 128kb/s.
Anyone else catch Paul Scuba's set at Module a few months back? Tightly coiled, moody dubstech (sic), perfect match for the venue, possibly gig of the year so far for me. Will be adding this beauty to my Hotflush Records mixed sets (marzie on the button again, N16 singed my synapses good n proper!)
ReplyDeleteThanks lots!
xo
tons of variety, which is always nice to hear in mixes these days.
ReplyDeletei always enjoy hearing artists such as Scuba, who may be considered on the fringe of many diff genres, tying them all together.
keep em coming

ReplyDeletehere you go chris. a live set by quantec on proton radio, thinks its his first ever live set recording, nice flow to it as well.
seems to be some hype around scuba, i must be honest i dont think his production is up to much so ittl be interesting to hear his mix!
peace brother
Whats the track at 37 mins with kids singing?
ReplyDeleteIt's called "It Doesn't Matter" by Just Listen!
ReplyDeletedamn. this mix makes me so happy.

lovely mix. the last track is by joy orbison http://www.myspace.com/joyorbison
ReplyDelete@ tomas: thanks for the ID.
ReplyDeletethanks for the ID!
ReplyDeletewas very keen to find that out
Joy Orbison - Tentative Bidding
ReplyDeleteunbelievable mix, this is the exact fusion of everything ive been loving out of the dubstep crossover from the last few years. but now finally it seems techno has truelly engulfed the new influences. techno is evolving once again and this is exactly where its at right now for me.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Joy Orbison, his forthcoming 'Hyph Mngo' on Hotflush is/will be massive...

ReplyDeleteFinally listened to this, absolutely excellent - best techno mix I've heard in ages. Thanks to everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteexcellent finely balanced mix. thankyou.
ReplyDelete"To the people not impressed by the mix, wash your ears and listen again"
ReplyDeleteI did just that and know I was blown away! this is the best mix I ever heard!
Anyway, I felt uneasy having a different opinion that every single commenter so I just changed my mind.
I really like this mix, nice stuff.
ReplyDeleteHave to admit I prefer Falko's mix overall, more variety and colour for me a few more 'moments'. Thought Scuba started off really well mind. And it was an oldies but goodies mix from Falko, someone who's been on the scene for ages, so fair play.
was this mix done on decks, cds or on a laptop, just out of interest?
ReplyDeleteGreat mix guys.
ReplyDeleteI always get a bit frustrated by people comparing sets. Each set is a unique expression created by an artist and represents his/her musical interest for a passing moment.
Falko's was completely different to Scuba's - What do you stand to gain by comparing them; rather than experiencing and enjoying them separately?
I was also puzzled by a comment not long ago stating Lerosa's mix was much better than Falko's.
If music is an expression: how can one expression be better than another...
Of course it's valid to compare art.
ReplyDeleteOne expression is as valid as another? What a load of bollocks.
Some art is half-baked insincere rubbish, some is amazing and there's a lot inbetween.
Look, I liked the Scuba mix, but prefered Falko's. Surely you can cope with that.
I like this site but the hyperbole and hypersensitivity is draining.
@ bad films: well i don't agree with your comment about "the hyperbole and hypersensitivity", but anyway... i think you can make comparisons, but they need to be between similar items. oranges with oranges, apples with apples. i am not sure if there is much point comparing the mixes by SCB, falko, and lerosa, because all 3 were different styles, trying to do different things. saying that, you could compare falko and lerosa because both were mixing up classics.
ReplyDeleteFair point chris.
ReplyDeleteTo me the Falko one sounded fresh as fuck, despite recognising a few of the tracks. Just got a real energy off it. Less so with Scuba one, felt less propulsion. That's all.
I suppose there is the can of worms around playing just new tracks or mixing oldies in there. If a DJ is showcasing a new sound then it wouldn't be fair to compare that to something like Falko's mix. On the other hand, a mix is a mix.
Lovely mix and great tracks :)
ReplyDeleteEspecially my fav track from the moment:
Donato Dozzy - Menta (Time to Express)
holy shite! is that a tom vek track in the middle of the mix ---> "if you want". and a suede track at the end? "the living dead"? sweet!
ReplyDelete@plasticefx no that's a different mix! The latest Hotflush podcast, which is here - http://www.hotflushrecordings.com/download.html
ReplyDeletepaul since 5 year i'm folowing your selection ! and you just rock ! bro !!!
ReplyDeletesubrider
Scuba can go take a dive in the deepest ocean known to man and never surface as long as the planet circles the sun. It's rubbish like this that ruins nights out for people who just want to dance to something.
ReplyDeletekiller!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSix months later and I'm STILL listening!
ReplyDeletelinks are down, can you reup please??
