Well,
after scanning the various sites today, I've come up with this rough, aggregated top ten 'most lauded albums of 07' list.
LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver
MIA – Kala
Radiohead – In Rainbows
Panda Bear – Person Pitch
The Field – From Here We Go Sublime
Robert Wyatt – Comicopera
Battles – Mirrored
Feist – The Reminder
Lairs – Liars
Burial – Untrue
In my humble opinion, the Battles, Field, and LCD entries are undeserving - of course these albums have their qualities, but what I'm alleging is that they're chronically over-rated.
Discuss.....
Dave W? What say you? I know you're 'across these' (to use the corporate jargon)...
What would you say is the 'most over-rated album of '07? Fellas?
I'm gonna have to go with The Field here. I just don't understand the praise it's getting. Or maybe I do ... as we've discussed in private emails, people seem to want to praise Kompakt records because they've got cred.
ReplyDeleteThen again, why not praise the Thomas Fehlmann album instead? (Which was a way better album than "From Here We Go Insipid.")
Anyways, I tried to get into the album several times, but failed every single time. Very nice sounds and surfaces, but I found nothing in there that really hooked me or nourished me ...
with the field it is all about the crossover...
ReplyDeletebut i must admit, i havent listened to any of the albums on that list. the only one i am interested in is the burial one and i am not sure whether i'll like that or not...
the ricky v fabric is another one. a lot of mixed opinions about it, but a lot of people giving it the thumbs up (including me).
not sure what else. i remain hugely sceptical of the album format...
I can't sand anything from MIA, so I say she gets the prize.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to disagree with you guys here for the first time :SSS
ReplyDeleteThe field is definitely not over rated. It's sublime, absolutely perfect, the recent album not so much. I connected with the field in so many different ways, it sends chills down my spine just thinking about it. I would even go as as to say one of the best minimal techno/ambient albums I have ever heard. Bought into the hype? Nah I don't think so, i got this by chance just because I liked the name, I hadn't heard a single review.. Mr Willner you Swedish bastard.. I salute you sir.
