Maybe i should have said that you probably stayed just for a day. That´d have been more appropriate since i was just guessing.... I apologize. Since it was not the case and the way you explain how everything occur, i just have to applaud your behavior back then.

And back to the issue, my main point was that they were responsible for so many people and being that the case, decisions to be taken may differ from when you are just deciding about yourself, like it was your case.

Im just saying that they were being cautious about many people´s health/lives. i just need to say some words about RBMA canc...Hi,

i just need to say some words about RBMA cancelling the academy in Tokio.

First of all the RBMA is not just taking place in october-november. The crew starts working there several months before. They arrange a whole building specially for the academy, sometimes constructing it from scratch, and need to organize and take care of one million details (and believe me, they take care of absolutely everything) prior to the academy onset.

I was lucky enough to be a participant in Toronto 2007 and can say that these troupe is, by far, the most considerate and mindful team that i ever worked with. Actually I was specially amazed by this fact. They really do take care of the participants and they DO love music. Its all what the academy is about: sharing music. Its not just a brand´s showing off with comercial purposes... ( @Colony, you couldnt be more wrong about your judgment, sorry to say....)

So, if they cancel the academy, its because they are responsible for more than 100 people including participants, tutors and crew members.... Expert predictions might be not super negative, but they are just that: predictions. Also a damaged nuclear plant in an island prone to suffer earthquackes is not precisely a controlled enviroment where you can be 100% sure that nothing is gonna happen again. Science is also not always exact. Im a scientist myself so i can assert it.

Derrick May just had to spend one day there, and leave, and he was only responsible for himself, i dont think you can even compare.

It´s not about leting Japan down, it´s about being cautious.Rebecahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07434063127895452537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7220957931635097123.post-41353137246211993142011-04-16T10:37:35.682+10:002011-04-16T10:37:35.682+10:00really appreciate the perspectivce.

Artists and tours who cancel really hurt the already financially unstable promoters... this may prove to be the final straw. I really don’t see many overseas artists being booked down here going forward, unless they are willing to pay for a fraction of their usual asking prices.
Anyway, cheers for the concise insights here.richttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09231165922864398510noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7220957931635097123.post-59093122476073968052011-04-04T09:12:20.477+10:002011-04-04T09:12:20.477+10:00@ Rokas' comment # 2:

Except for the RBMA...Very thoughtful piece Chris.

Except for the RBMA decision to postpone (I think they will reschedule rather than pull out), I wasn't aware of many artists cancelling gigs.

It is a great privilege to play in Japan so it shows the impact the media coverage of the nuclear situation is having is artists are taking those measures.

It's been a mixture of genuine uncertainty, some xenophobia (portraying the Japan authorities as 'face-saving' and unwilling to disclose full details) and blatant scare-mongering. There is also a strong anti-nuclear lobby at work portraying events in a bad light to further their arguments against nuclear power.

I have followed the media closely because a). I have a lot of friends living in Tokyo, b). I have been lucky enough to have visited many times and like many have been treated so well by the Japanese people c). Japan is one of the biggest markets for my music d). I live relatively close to a large nuclear power station (Sizewell).

I assume it's the nuclear fear that is causing artists the most concern - rather than fear of aftershocks or breakdown of infrastructure, etc.

Outside of recent events, it's interesting to hear your straight-up assessment of the Techno scene in general. It confirms what I've heard from friends living there have been saying for the past 5 years now: that the Techno scene in Japan is no longer what is used to be.

Whereas you largely put this down to economic factors, I suspect there are more complex reasons for this. Economically, Japan has been struggling for many years - not just recently. Recessions and less disposable income do not always impact nightlife/music as much as other industries - it has been shown to be an escape in rough times and spending generally remains constant.

I've heard other factors are to blame for the shrinking of Japan's Techno scene: the language being a barrier to the online Techno community of English language-based forums, blogs and social networks; the smaller number of young Japanese labels/producers compared with 10-15 years ago; disinterest due to repeat bookings of familiar names.

I hope the Japanese Techno community can take this tragic time to reflect on how the scene became so vulnerable when as you say, the country and Tokyo in particular is such an inspiration to us all.

Hope to see you soon in Tokyo.

KirkKIRK DEGIORGIOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10229957374092650210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7220957931635097123.post-60724016865717689212011-04-03T05:50:07.303+10:002011-04-03T05:50:07.303+10:00"The View From Tokyo" is very well writt..."The View From Tokyo" is very well written,,i could not have said it better myself..the media along with ignorance has caused long term damage that must be addressed....NOW!Derrick Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00020679066937837694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7220957931635097123.post-88001024795674977142011-04-03T05:45:43.127+10:002011-04-03T05:45:43.127+10:00This comment has been removed by the author.Derrick Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00020679066937837694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7220957931635097123.post-88438590069691872012011-04-03T04:16:18.095+10:002011-04-03T04:16:18.095+10:00god dammit. just wrote long reply to this and got ...god dammit. just wrote long reply to this and got 'sorry cannot process this message'... cant write it again.

main points!

agents pls stop overcharging japan based promoters (with few exceptions). i have a lost a FORTUNE over the years trying to bring underground acts to Japan

djs dont get sucked into the panic about japan! get out there. now is when they really need you!

media take a good look! sometimes you are actually further ruining peoples lives and not helping in the least ...

agents/djs quit demanding 2/3 gigs to come - the scene in Tokyo is tough enough without needing pressure to get non-Tokyo gigs for you!

ps. Shame on RBMA indeed (not that it's ever smelled like anything other than a glossy corporate initiative to score brownie points with the "cool kids", as much as it has it perks), and good on Mayday for doing the right thing (even if half of what he plays these days is pretty suspect). If I were a touring international DJ, I'd kill to play Tokyo right now. The air pollution where I live (just north of the City of London) is shocking enough as it is!

Whatever the case, we'll be doing our damndest to make Lab again this year. Techno is, amongst many other things, a form of solidarity, and it's a crying shame that artists are abandoning Japan at a time when they could do so much good. ColdFuture and I have always said that if techno were to ever die, that the last men standing would be a group we referred to as the "Tokyo 25"...the last 25 techno samurai on the planet to hold out till the end, at any cost.
I began work on a track the morning of the tsunami...'Being Swept Away', to help raise money for the victims.
