and the hits keep on coming... following on from cio's lovely mix, the latest edition in the mnml ssgs mx series comes from NYC's eric cloutier. eric was someone who we came across last year, i think it may have been a mix he did for the ghostly 'cast that grabbed our attention. that combined with him tending to make comments we agree with was enough for us to think that he'd make a fine addition to the series. unsurprisingly, eric has stepped up to the plate and delivered an impressive mix which shows a deft touch on the decks. it has taken a bit longer than expected for eric to come up with the mix, as he kept mindfucking himself in the process, but it was definitely worth the wait. he explained to me that, 'before i wasn't letting myself come through and was putting too much pressure on myself, but when it came down to it, relaxing and just going with what i know and feel yielded a mix that i'm exceptionally proud to share with ssgs and its audience.' and he certainly should feel proud. this one is a beauty.
mnml ssgs mx22: eric cloutier
eric puts on a monthly night in new york called 'down', which is every third thursday at oulu lounge in brooklyn. here is his discription of it: 'always free, guests here and there. almost never breaking 120bpm. it was basically created out of my own personal desire to hear something outside of the normal dancefloor affair, as well finally use some music that i've owned and adored for years that i never get to play.' sounds like pretty good logic to me. you can find more info about eric at his myspace and his webpage.
big thanks to eric for really digging deep on this mix. as everyone knows, we have a distinct concept and purpose with this series and we are always very happy when the contributor fully signs up to what we are trying to do. so much respect to eric. and sorry, we are a bit behind on things so tracklisting for cio's mix soon, plus for this one too. also, the next mix - which should be up in a week - is from kevin gorman. get excited and for now, enjoy the carefully crafted sounds of eric cloutier.
Thanks for this new episode guys. Really looking forward listening to it. Will download the mix when I get home, it'll be the first thing that I do.

By they way, one more thing I would like to add. I think it's nice you guys are trying to look for 'new' names or at least trying to be unpredictable.
ReplyDeleteCio is / was an obvious choice, she's on top, but I never saw this Eric Cloutier mix coming.
So thanks for that also!
The mixes i've found so far have all been quality. A top call from you ssgs boys
ReplyDeleteHe's got an old mix from 2006 that I listen to from time to time, over at the Betoni mix site:

Whether it's the passion of the writing, the dedication to a distinct musical feel rather than form, or just the fact that I've yet to listen to a duff ssgs mix, you chaps continue to inspire me.
ReplyDeleteA long-winded way of saying I'm looking forward to this one... :D
It is a really nice mix. Thanks ssgs + Eric.
ReplyDeleteDownloading mx22 right now!
ReplyDeleteDo you believe I actually had been thinking of suggesting that you contacted Kevin Gorman for a mix?

ReplyDelete"I think it's nice you guys are trying to look for 'new' names or at least trying to be unpredictable."
Thanks very much for all your kind words (same goes for everyone).
As for the above, one of the things we were adamant about from the get go is that we're not looking for 'names', but rather people whose music is exciting us now: so we don't commission mixes to get high fives from our friends or 'reco' for 'names'.
The internet has done a pretty good job of filtering out the wheat from the chaff with this: the good 'casts stand out in the sea of also rans, and the people who are really making something new, special, amazing *right now* stand out a mile. I think of Seth Troxler as but one example.
...but nonetheless there is a disconnect between the brand recognition of 'names' and the quality of their current output... and without (ahem) naming any names, there are a lot of people whose work we have loved very much in the past that we've decided not to contact for the very reason that it would be for sentimental/recognition reasons, rather than 'cos they're in their groove right now, here, in 2009.
Geat mix, beautiful tunes. Has been the only thing I've listened to this week. Really glad I've found this site. Thanks for all your work.
ReplyDeleteanyone know the name of the track at 41 minutes?
ReplyDeletei've heard this in quite a few mixes recently and enjoy it very much..
...and, Great mix!
eric cloutier AKA Element eight. This guy is quite a long time in NY music scene. I know him from adapteri.com/betoni site which is still alive, and made a big influece for me. There are quite a few mixes on his myspace address aswell.

What a superb mix. Absolutely loving it. Has been on repeat whilst I cook the Sunday roast. Thanks x
ReplyDeleteGreat talent. Really liking this mix. I'm beginning to see a lot of talent coming out of NY.
ReplyDeleteA suggestion for any upcoming shows, New Yorker, Adam Vana. He has a bunch of mixes on his myspace page and on his website. I just got done listening to one of his sets from Le Poisson Rouge on August 23, 2008 and holy cow is it a beauty.
He mixes a variety of different genres in this mix starting off slow and then getting into some classic house then some dark deepish techno. Best of all, most of the tracks I haven't heard before :) Anyway, link below!
